- Sterilized glass jar with lid
- Glass spray bottle
- Vinegar (any kind)
- Dried calendula flowers
- Dried yarrow flowers
- Dried comfrey flowers
- Dried borage flowers
- Aloe vera gel
- Lavender essential oil
- Seabuckthorn oil (optional)
Note: see bottom to determine amounts
- The first step is to make an acetract, a vinegar extract of the herbs. Grind the herbs in a coffee grinder. Fill the mason jar 1/3 full of the calendula, yarrow, comfrey, and borage flowers.
- Fill the jar with vinegar so it covers the herbs by an inch.
- Cover the jar with wax paper and screw lid on tight.
- Let the herbs macerate for 2 weeks, shaking daily.
- Place the cheesecloth in the strainer and pour vinegar and herbs through the strainer. Make sure to press the herbs to get all the vinegar out.
- Add aloe vera gel in the same amount of the vinegar.
- Add 10 drops lavender essential oil.
- Optional: add 1 TBSP seabuckthorn oil
- Mix well and pour into glass spray bottles.
Store in the refrigerator. Apply to skin after prolonged sun exposure. The spray should keep in the refrigerator for a few months but monitor it for mold growth.
For those of you who are not excited about making an acetract, you can simply omit it from the recipe and use the aloe vera and essential oil instead.
to Determine Amounts
First, determine how much spray you want to make. A reasonable amount for one person would be 4 ounces. For 4 ounces of spray, you will need 2 ounces aloe vera and 2 ounces of vinegar. To make the acetract with 2 ounces of vinegar, you will need approximately 2-3 TBSP of the herbs. I generally use the herbs in equal parts but you can use more of one or omit some.
