Sleep Health

Do you struggle with your sleep?

  • Do you have a hard time falling asleep?
  • Do you wake in the night and struggle to fall back asleep?
  • Do you lie awake in bed for hours praying for sleep?
  • Do you wake exhausted every morning?
  • Do you never feel like you have enough energy?
  • Are you so sleep deprived that your brain feels like mush and you can't control your emotions?
  • Have you tried every possible sleep aid and still no success?

We understand. And we can help.

When it comes to sleep disorders, medications are not the answer. Because an Ambien deficiency is not the cause of your sleep disorder. Also medications create dependency, don't actually result in healthy sleep architecture (healthy brain waves during sleep), and often have the same side effects as the symptoms of sleep deprivation.

At BioAdaptive Medicine, we dig deeper to figure out the real cause of your sleep issue.

Integrative Sleep Medicine

The most common underlying issues with sleep complaints are:

  • improper sleep hygiene
  • adrenal dysfunction
  • nutrient deficiencies
  • genetic mutations
  • neurotransmitter imbalances
  • neuroinflammation

At BioAdaptive Medicine, we will thoroughly investigate your sleep issues with a careful history, functional laboratory testing as needed, and a sleep diary. Our goal is to identify and treat the root cause so you can enjoy the best sleep of your life without the use of medications or even supplements. In the beginning, we often use a combination of herbs and nutrients to support better sleep while we work to identify and address the underlying issues. Treating the underlying issues may involve lifestyle changes, dietary changes, targeted nutrient supplementation, and more.

Thyroid Health

The most mismanaged conditions in medicine are thyroid disorders. Why? Doctors don't know how to properly test for thyroid conditions. Doctors often misdiagnose thyroid conditions. And doctors commonly use the incorrect treatment.

But not at BioAdaptive Medicine.

The most common issue with the thyroid gland is underproduction of thyroid hormones, called hypothyroidism. And the most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune attack on the thyroid called Hashimoto's.

Signs of hypothyroidism

  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Weight Gain
  • Constipation
  • Feeling Cold
  • Brain Fog
  • Dry Skin
  • Hair Loss
  • Brittle Nails
  • Weakness
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Arthritis
  • Stiffness & Joint Pain
  • Heavy Menstrual Periods
  • Infertility

Lab Testing

If you have symptoms of hypothyroidism, we will order a comprehensive thyroid panel to get the correct diagnosis. The panel will include:

  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Anti-TPO
  • Anti-TG

If you have a thyroid disorder, we will not miss it. Most other doctors only use TSH to screen for thyroid disorders and they also use an outdated reference range so they incorrectly interpret your result. This means that even if your doctor told you that your thyroid is fine, chances are it isn't.

Integrative Endocrinology

At BioAdaptive Medicine, we don't just treat thyroid disorders with synthetic thyroid hormone. We will often use medications as a temporary bandaid to get your feeling better, but we work to identify why your thyroid is dysfunctional. Do you have nutrient deficiencies? Do you have chemicals in your body disrupting your thyroid? Is this an autoimmune attack? Is the autoimmune attack provoked by gut infections, parasites, SIBO, food sensitivities, or chronic viral infections? Do you have other hormonal imbalances interfering with your thyroid such as adrenal dysfunction or estrogen dominance?

We do a comprehensive evaluation to identify the problem and determine a targeted natural treatment. Medication may be a temporary part of your treatment protocol, but we will work to restore your health so you don't have to be on medication for the rest of your life. For medications, we typically start with a natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) medication such as WP Thyroid. We will work with your body to identify the best medication, whether that is natural, synthetic, compounded, or combination T4/T3 therapy.

Lab testing

Don't guess at your hormone imbalances. Get tested! And do the right testing. Blood tests and saliva samples only reveal so much. With dried urine testing, you can get a better idea of your overall hormone production and how your body metabolizes your hormones (which is really important!).

Integrative Approach to hormones

Hormones are complicated. And addressing hormonal imbalances is not as simple as doing bio-identical hormone replacement (BHRT). In fact, for most women using hormones that your body didn't make just makes the hormonal imbalances worse. Because those exogenous hormones cause your body to stop even trying to make its own. And that is not what we want.

So at BioAdaptive Medicine, our goal is to help your body make its own hormones in a balanced ratio. How? By identifying why your organs are dysfunctional in the first place. Stress, blood sugar dysregulation, improper nutrition, nutrient deficiencies, genetic mutations, and inflammation can all be underlying causes of hormonal imbalances. Lifestyle changes, proper nutrition, addressing nutrient deficiencies, and using botanical medicine can go a long way to naturally restoring hormonal balance.

For those ladies that have hormonal imbalances because their ovaries are no longer capable of making estrogen and progesterone, BHRT may be appropriate.

At BioAdaptive Medicine, we will personalize a protocol to get you feeling your best at any age!

Digestive Health

Are you experiencing...

  • gas
  • bloating
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal discomfort
  • heartburn
  • food sensitivities

or other chronic digestive symptoms that impact your daily life? Are you sick and tired of these symptoms interfering with your work and your social life? Have you had to restrict so many foods that all you are now eating is lamb and kale?

At BioAdaptive Medicine, we understand your pain...and we know how to fix it. Because you don't have IBS despite what your other doctors have told. And you can heal your gut so you can live symptom free and medication free.

Integrative Gastroenterology

Instead of focusing on your symptoms, we dig deep to figure out why you have them in the first place. And then we fix that. Common underlying issues of digestive symptoms are:

  • insufficient stomach acid or digestive enzymes
  • impaired gut motility
  • food sensitivities
  • increased intestinal permeability (aka leaky gut)
  • overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine (aka SIBO)
  • lack of beneficial bacteria and/or overgrowth of commensal or dysbiotic species
  • parasites or yeast
  • nutrient depletions affecting the health of gut cells
  • stress and elevated cortisol

Laboratory testing

We use standard and functional labs to identify the root causes of your symptoms. Labs may include:

  • Comprehensive Stool Analysis to evaluate digestion, inflammation, bacteria, yeast, and parasites
  • Food Allergy Testing to identify foods causing inflammation
  • Lactulose Breath Test to screen for SIBO
  • Micronutrient Testing to identify nutrient deficiencies
  • and more!

Adrenal Dysfunction

Is this you?

  • You don’t have as much energy as you would like.
  • When you wake up in the morning, you want to hit the snooze button again and again.
  • You need one cup of coffee before you feel human.
  • Your brain always feels a little sluggish and you aren’t as productive or as focused as you want to be.
  • You feel anxious a lot and you don’t know how to relax anymore.
  • You get sick often and you’re starting to gain weight, especially in your middle.
  • You don’t want to feel this way anymore.
  • You want to feel vibrant, energetic, and strong.

Then you may suffer from adrenal dysfunction.

The adrenals are two glands that sit on top of your kidneys. There job is to make hormones that are involved in energy, blood sugar balance, metabolism, reproduction, mineral balance and the stress response.

That's right. We are talking about stress and cortisol.

When we experience chronic stress, our adrenal glands dump high amounts of cortisol into our bloodstream. That excess cortisol wreaks havoc on our body. Our blood sugar gets out of whack, we start craving sugar, we put on weight around our middle, we feel tense and anxious, our muscles ache, we feel wired and have trouble sleeping, our digestion gets out of whack, and we start getting sick all the time. Sound familiar?

If this continues to happen, our body will shut down the HPA axis, which signals our adrenal gland to make cortisol. This is our body's attempt to protect us.

But then our adrenal glands aren't making any cortisol and other adrenal hormones may begin to drop. And then we start feeling really tired. We struggle to get out of bed in the morning. We barely have enough energy to make it through the day. Everything exhausts us. Exercise. Thinking. Working. Going grocery shopping. Everything.

This is the progression of adrenal dysfunction. The good news is that no matter what your stage of adrenal dysfunction, we can help you heal using natural therapies.

Signs of Adrenal Dysfucntion

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Feeling exhausted even after adequate sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low tolerance to stress
  • Mood swings
  • Sugar cravings
  • Chronic pain
  • Elevated blood sugar
  • Feeling wired, but tired
  • Digestive issues
  • Lowered immunity
  • and more

Lab Testing

When it comes to adrenal dysfunction, it is important to do the right testing. This is so you can the right treatment. I have seen so many people use no testing or improper testing, leading to improper treatment. And they don't feel better. Or they feel worse.

Dried urine testing reveals how much total cortisol your adrenals are producing and how your body is metabolizing that cortisol. Saliva and blood tests evaluate free cortisol, which is only 1-3% of your adrenals total cortisol production. So I see people being diagnosed with low cortisol when they really have high cortisol that their body is metabolizing quickly.

At BioAdaptive Medicine, we thoroughly evaluate your adrenal gland to get a complete picture of your adrenal health. Then we strategically use nutrition, botanical medicine, nutrients, and lifestyle changes to reset your adrenals so you can reclaim your energy and your life!

Autoimmune Disease

You’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

Your doctors have told you that your condition is incurable. That it will only get worse with time and there is nothing you can do. You can only take strong medications that have a lot of side effects.

But you know there has to be something that you can do. Something natural that doesn't have all the side effects. Something that will actually fix the problem and not just treat your symptoms and suppress your immune system.

You are right. At BioAdaptive Medicine we use an integrative & holistic model of autoimmunity to go beyond your symptoms and heal your body. Watch the video to learn how an integrative approach can solve your autoimmunity.

The goals of treating autoimmunity:

  • Identify the underlying triggers for your autoimmune condition.
  • Design a natural remedy plan that eliminates your triggers, balances your immune system, and reduces inflammation.
  • Reduce or eliminate your symptoms so that you can live medication free and restore your quality of life.
  • Design a long-term dietary and lifestyle regimen to make sure your symptoms don’t return so you can enjoy a happier & healthier life.

Who is this approach for?

  • Anyone who has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease
  • Anyone who has a family history of autoimmune disease and wishes to reduce their risk of autoimmunity
  • Anyone who has a known genetic predisposition for autoimmunity and wishes to reduce their risk

Laboratory Testing

The laboratory testing will help us identify your underlying autoimmune triggers and assess your gut health, cellular health, and hormonal health. Labs to consider in autoimmunity are:

  • Organic Acids Test to assess mitochondrial function, microbial overgrowths, nutritional imbalances, oxidative stress, neurotransmitters levels and more
  • IgG Food Allergy Test to identify your reactive foods
  • Comprehensive Stool Analysis to identify digestive insufficiencies, bacteria, fungus, or parasites that may be modulating the immune system and causing inflammation
  • SIBO Breath Test to identify bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, a common trigger of autoimmunity
  • Metals Hair Test to identify heavy metal exposure
  • Toxic Organic Chemical Profile to screen for the presence of 172 different toxic chemicals including organophosphate pesticides, phthalates, benzene, xylene, vinyl chloride, pyrethroid insecticides, acrylamide, perchlorate, diphenyl phosphate, ethylene oxide, acrylonitrile, and more
  • Glyphosate Test to screen for exposure to this common and toxic herbicide
  • Vitamin D Test
  • Micronutrient Test to identify nutritional deficiencies contributing to autoimmunity
  • Phospholipase A2 Activity to assess inflammation levels
  • Adrenal Hormone Test to evaluate cortisol levels and adrenal function
  • Comprehensive Antibody Testing to identify specific autoimmunity
  • and more!
Years ago, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis and prescribed medications that just made me feel worse. My doctor kept prescribing medications to manage the side effects of the other medications and I had enough. Luckily, I found Dr. Carly. She figured out which foods were contributing to my inflammation right away. Just making those small changes in my diet made a world of difference. I no longer need medications for my pain. I can sleep through the night and I can do yoga again!
